A brand new year has already begin and so have the dope comebacks and debuts of the artists in the diverse K-Pop Music Industry that all of us love so much!

Let’s start with the reviews of these amazing releases of the very first month, shall we?

Let’s go!

Week 1 (1st January-7th January)

      1. ATEEZ- ‘Answer’

Ateez are on their way to World Domination!

The latest track in their Treasure Epilogue, Answer starts off with a  little restrained sounds that gives way to a wave of energy in the pre-chorus which explodes ‘the Ateez way ;)’ during the chorus when the expensive and extremely talented boys gather around for a great, grand party.

The track transitions between different genres very smoothly starting off from the restrained sound to the hard-hitting hip hop beats to the catchy EDM sounds which lends greater appeal to the dope track.

      2. SF9 – ‘Good Guy’

SF9 is here to steal hearts with their “Gentlemanly Good Guy” concept!

With stunning videography, a sophisticated atmosphere reinserted by the trendy “expensive” suits and gold bracelets, the track sure carries weight, enough to make you repeatedly hit the replay button 😉

The track also carries a very retro feeling in addition to the musical inspiration it draws from the generic EDM sounds and jazz melody.

      3. VERIVERY – ‘Lay Back’

A super strong return of the rookies!

This song is in contrast with their other cuter yet hard-hitting songs as this one has more darker, aesthetic scenes, a great melodic buildup and groovy, almost ‘laid-back’ beat drop just before the chorus, which is a different dimension altogether 😉

      4. (B.O.Y) – ‘My Angel’

With a debut track that displays all their skill set, B.O.Y. has entered the music industry smoothly!

A soothing melody that allows their vocals to shine and with high notes that give goosebumps and are eargasmic, it is safe to say that this debut track is an audience stealer!

I especially liked the way they not only showcased their ballad skills perfectly but also experimented with the EDM sound inputs which was very refreshing to hear.

      5. MCND ‘TOP GANG’

Best Pre-debut track release in a long, long time!

The track is like a brand new exploration of the Korean Ballad spectrum!

The beautiful lyrics and mellifluous vocals of Younha along with the hard-hitting final chorus of the track are what lend an edge to the song, making it more than “just another typical ballad”.

Week 2 (8th January-14th January)

      1. BTS – Map Of The Soul: 7 ‘Interlude : Shadow’

One of the most inventive things BTS have ever released!

The track that introduces the new chapter in the world-changing BTS music brings rapper Suga into the limelight as he starts the new chapter with a fierce emo-rap sermon on the side effects of success.

This track is a beautiful masterpiece that brings out the emotions and thoughts of these highly influential and successful boys of Bangtan Sonyeondan at what they find at the top of the world after gaining all the success that they had in the last few years.

As the highly revered rapper of BTS, Suga had already said, “Fame is like a shadow”.

      2. ZICO- ‘Any Song’

Zico’s music hits differently because it is really “Real Music”!

The charm of the song lies in the contrast between the upbeat trendy beats and the subdued message of the song. The highlights of the track though are definitely the switch upper at the end with the playful tango music in the background and Zico’s cute goofy dance moves when he puts on his headphones and starts vining while his friends sleep xD

      3. pH-1 – ‘Nerdy Love’ (Feat. Yerin Baek) (Prod. Mokyo)

As if Mokyo and pH-1 already weren’t a dope combo, Yerin Baek comes along and adds the cherry on top 😉

This track is like that chilled out retro styled song that you listen to when you are in “The Mood!

The beautiful vocals of Yerin Baek also perfectly complement pH-1’s singing trap style flow, making the track a definite add to the groovy playlist of 2020.

      4. Amber Liu – ‘Stay Calm’

“You are You. Nobody can take that away from you.”

With these very inspiring words from Amber who has struggled for so long to be “the real her”, the music video of this track shows the real, happy moments of Amber Liu’s life as she accepts herself and decides to stay true to her real self.

A truly inspirational song with a truly amazing and courageous artist, Stay Calm is a must-must listen for all those who think they are not good enough and so hide behind the facade of what is accepted as being normal.

      5. ANS – ‘Say My Name’

This track sounds like a track that will come out when you put all the hits of the past few years in a mixer, it’s that good!

An underrated bop that has the potential to take over the industry!

With a high quality music video and inspiring girl power concept, Say My Name is a track that is most definitely “Playlist-material”.

      6. DreamNote- ‘Wish’

Feels like this rookie group is finally on the path of finding their own colour as a group!

With a percussive and robust chorus, cute aegyo moments and a very surprising trap-infused breakdown, the track is a step towards evolution as artists in the K-Pop industry.

The bouncy sounds and colourful imagery of the track also adds to overall appeal of it.

Week 3 (15th January- 21st January)

      1. BTS- ‘Black Swan’

The most groundbreaking performance to have ever been released!

This uneasy trap ballet talks about the fear that has been weighing on the minds of these great musicians and dancers of ‘music no longer speaking to them as it once did.’

This fear, uncertainty and anxiety is heightened even more by the ethereal vocals of the skilled vocalists in the group as they increasingly hit higher and higher notes. The dance moves and the eccentric music accompanied by the strumming classical strings also highlight these emotions of the group as they struggle to come to terms with their changed state and status and their fear of falling out of love of the very core of their profession: Music.

      2. Chanyeol x Punch – ‘Go Away Go Away’ (Romantic Dr. Teacher Kim OST Part. 3)

After the hit OST, ‘Stay With Me’, Chanyeol is back and killing it!

The best thing about this track is that it portrays the multifaceted skill set of Chanyeol, not only as a rapper but also as a support system of the high-quality soloist,Punch as they harmonise together perfectly.

The warm tones of the track also add a different colour to it, making the song seem more personal and touching to the listeners.

      3. Paul Kim, Chung Ha- ‘Loveship’

This track gave me really strong K-Drama vibes!

The track is about childhood friends starting to have feelings for each other which they are afraid to pursue because of their friendship. A sad, sad love story backed the equally heart-rending vocals and lyrics of two of the most talented singers of K-Pop industry that ends with a hope of what would be a beautiful love story!

      4. iKON-ON : Bobby – ‘Rest Your Bones’

SMTM 3 Winner, Bobby is back with a solo track and its pure bliss!

This song really shows how much he has grown as an artist and as a person as he transcends the narrow music spectrum of spitting bars as a rapper to vocalising the true melody of a singer as well.

Highlight of the track however and his special charming feature is the raspy quality that all his raps and now even his singing has and how even after that raspy quality, his voice still comes out as warm and pleasing.

Listen exclusively on Youtube!

      5. Taeyeon – ‘Dear Me’

Taeyeon’s voice really has healing powers!

With inspiring listeners by her story of accepting to love and trust herself, this track by Taeyeon offers warmth and hope for better future to all which is the most important thing to convey to the listeners as an artist 🙂

Week 4 (22nd January-31st January)

      1. Dynamicduo, Chen – ‘You’

This track is so emotion evoking, I couldn’t help when my eyesight started getting blurry T.T

With a really meaningful music video, DynamicDuo’s insightful veteran flow and lyrics, and beautifully-married-and-turning-daddy-soon Chen’s mellifluous vocals, there is no way this song won’t be able to move you and make your eyes well up too!

      2. Sechskies – ‘All For You’

The 1st Gen K-Pop legends are back to take you on a trip to heaven 😉

The relaxing feels of this track, brought forth by the ear-pleasing and harmonious vocals of the members and the nostalgic memories of the band of the 1st generation Korean music it evokes are the elements that make this song as great and beautiful as it is.

      3. Super Junior- ‘2YA2YAO!’

If you are ready to have fun, put your hands up!

The dark, eccentric music in the beginning of the track makes you anticipate what is to unfold and you wouldn’t be disappointed at all as an almost funky 90s big and confident beats play complemented by the amazing vocals and rap flows of the members.

I also absolutely loved the choreography which was extremely catchy and charismatic 😉

Hats off for Zico too for the dope and skilful production he has done of this track!

      4. Golden Child- ‘Without You’

A superior and engaging track by a superior rookie group!

The track starts off with a very low tempo and breathy vocals and has a slow build-up but interestingly, this is the very key charm of it!

The moody sentiment it carries, the catchy hooks and a rap flow that stands out from all the other K-Pop songs, this track is undoubtedly one of the best tracks to start the year of comebacks of 2020.

      5. Siyeon (of Dreamcatcher)- ‘Paradise’

Make way for the mellifluous and alluring soloist from Dreamcatcher!

A dramatic melody and electronic influences that govern the track’s production lend Siyeon’s solo track its charisma that makes it stand apart from the other run-of-the-mill ballads of the age.
