Top 10 Korean Dramas Of 2019 #KHighRewind

When deciding our top loves in terms of Korean entertainment sources, the only thing that comes to mind second to our ultimate love K-music, are Kdramas.

This year was an emotion-filled journey in the Kdrama world that offered its viewers a wide variety of sentimental scenes ranging from swoon-worthy romance scenes, hilarious comic segments, some despairing situations to overcome and a handful of dope adrenalin-packed action scenes.

Here is our pick of the top 10 Kdramas that played our heartstrings like the fiddle along with a little added bonus section for you all 😉

Let’s begin the fun then, shall we?

  1. When The Camellia Blooms

KOREAN NAME: 동백꽃 필 무렵 (Dongbaek-kkot pil muryeop) | STARRING: Gong Hyo-Jin, Kang Ha-neul, Kim Ji-seok,Ji yi-su, Oh Jung-se, Yeom Hye-ran | GENRE: Romantic comedy, Thriller

A beautiful depiction of helplessness and determination that opens the path of finding bravery!

Since the cast consists of all experienced thespians, the expectations for this drama were high and these veteran actors and actresses delivered phenomenal performances through the highly charged and emotional scenes in the drama.

What is lovely about the plotline and the drama as a whole is the realism in it. It is not a story set in a different sphere but is a story that draws from our own society. This strengthens the appeal of the drama as viewers will definitely be able to connect more to the storyline.

A moral lesson that we should all learn from the drama is, “There’s no particular age when you just grow up and stop learning; you keep learning your entire life through the experiences life serves you. It is also tough to be nice in today’s world but being nice is not a weakness; strength is within all of us and we just have to find it and not let anyone, not even ourselves, belittle who we are.”

  1. Her Private Life

KOREAN NAME: 그녀의 사생활 (Geunyeoui Sasaenghwal) | STARRING: Park Min-young, Kim Jae-wook, Jung Jae-won (One), Ahn Bo-hyun, Kim Bo-ra | GENRE: Romance, Comedy

A story of a fangirl’s life in which she fights through the daily struggles of being a fangirl and finds a love who accepts even her fangirl side 😉

The drama starts with a portrayal of the blissful yet secretive life of the fangirl Deok Mi (Park Min-young), a fan of Cha Shi An (ONE); a part which will seem relatable to us, desi viewers as it resonates with the fangirl inside every one of us.

However, the appeal of the drama does not just lie in its offer of a sneak peek into a fangirl’s life but also the other angles that are covered when the male main lead’s, complicated past is discovered and resolved. The show’s subtle portrayal of its support for the LGBT community in the first few episodes is something we need to see happen in the Korean Entertainment industry and is truly commendable.

The sometimes cute, sometimes sizzling chemistry between the main leads, Cha Shi An’s (ONE) angelic smiles that can make a person giddy as if on a sugar rush and the rib-tickling hilarious scenes throughout the series, make this drama one of the best romantic comedies of Korea 😉

  1. Romance is a Bonus Book

KOREAN NAME: 로맨스는 별책부록 (Romaenseuneun Byeolchaekburok) | STARRING: Lee Na-young, Lee Jong-suk | GENRE: Romantic Comedy

Just another sappy love story without much plot development but strangely has the power to hook the viewers and make them binge-watch!

The cast seems to be really well chosen as Lee Jong-suk nails the role of the ‘Noona lover’ and Lee Na-young also handles her role with grace, fitting well in the ‘stereotypical Korean single mom searching for her breakthrough’ role.

What is another good point of the drama is how it never seems to become monotonous as the love story of the main leads is interwoven with the stories of the second leads and other couples in the drama.

The ending too is as neat as they could make it, tying all the loose ends together and packaging it like a perfect fairy tale romance book 😉

  1. Angel’s Last Mission: Love

KOREAN NAME: , 하나의 사랑 (Dan, Hanaui Sarang) | STARRING: Shin Hye-sun, Kim Myung-soo (L of Infinite), Lee Dong-gun, Kim Bo-mi, Do Ji-won | GENRE: Romance, Drama, Fantasy, Supernatural

This is one of the most beautiful love stories about an angel’s forbidden yet selfless love for a human!

From endlessly bickering with each other to selflessly doing something sweet for the other person, the adorable romance brewing between the two main leads is so heartwarming to witness.

The cast has dished out some solid acting for the viewers in this drama. The most notable of them being the female lead, Shin Hye-sun’s acting of the ‘prickly outside but good inside Lee Yoon Soo’. One of the highlights of her acting is the forced smile she gives on Secretary Jo’s funeral; the millions of emotions that one smile carried and conned to the viewers say a lot about her passion for acting.

With a refined storyboard and excellent acting, the drama is sure to captivate its viewers, especially with all the unpredictable twists and turns in the fates of the characters in the drama.

  1. Hotel Del Luna

KOREAN NAME: 호텔 델루나 (Hotel Del Luna) | STARRING:Lee Ji-eun (IU), Yeo Jin-goo | GENRE: Dark Fantasy, Romantic Comedy

A magical space that has a lasting impression!

Paying close attention to detail, the actors of Hotel Del Luna ropes in the viewers with their passionate performances that take special care to portray their unique characters exquisitely.

Another major aspect adding to the charm of the drama is the beautiful, dreamy cinematography and rich scenery that pervades every episode. The storyboard that defies conventional lines and parodies various other serious dramas of the same category, make the story a capricious ‘horror-fantasy-romance’.

  1. Vagabond

KOREAN NAME: 배가본드 (Baegabondeu) | STARRING: Lee Seung-gi, Bae Suzy, Shin Sung-rok | GENRE: Spy, Action, Thriller, Romance

With an engaging storyline and adrenalin-filled episodes, this thrilling action series deserves a spot on your binge list!

From its very first episode up to its last, this series which has highly charged action scenes, a little bit of romance, themes of betrayal and conspiracy with a touch of a comic element, doesn’t disappoint its viewers on any aspect.

The action scenes are especially a great delight to watch as they are extremely well planned out, with various scenes even going as far as to make the viewers hold their breaths in anticipation, totally spellbound.

The drama ends with a flourish with a cliffhanger leaving the viewers with as much anticipation as to when it first started 😉

  1. He is Psychometric

KOREAN NAME: 사이코메트리 그녀석 (Saikometeuri Geunyeoseok) | STARRING: Park Jin-young (of Got7), Shin Ye-eun, Kwon Kim, Kim Da-som | GENRE: Thriller, Crime, Romantic Comedy

The Bromance in this drama is the cutest!

With the high-spirited cast that manages to engage the viewers with their performances and an interesting narrative, this drama takes its viewers on an emotional rollercoaster. It makes the viewers fall for the cute romance brewing on the sidelines, laugh at the subtle humor in some scenes, and feel heartbreak when seeing Lee An (Park Jin-young) break down after discovering the sad truth about Kang Sung Mo’s involvement in the accident.

The portrayal of the characters’ background and reasons for why they undertook a certain path or action, also makes it easier for the viewers to relate to them and understand their motivations for their actions throughout the drama.

The characters on their tough journey to freedom from their past, also teach its viewers a very important lesson of “Moving forward from a tragic past to a brighter future” 🙂

  1. Touch Your Heart

KOREAN NAME: 진심이 닿다 (Jinsimi Data) | STARRING:Yoo In-na, Lee Dong-wook | GENRE: Romantic Comedy

If you have watched the k-drama, Goblin you probably already know that the chemistry between Yoo In-na and Lee Dong-wook is literally off the charts!

To see these two amazing actors starring in their own drama as the main leads is a blessing in itself. Their powerful expressions that conveyed the loneliness of the two souls who meet and fall in love in a normal law office life and the emotions they feel throughout their journey of realizing their love for each other can warm your hearts instantly.

The comic elements of the drama are also well-timed and well-executed, most definitely winning a smile/ giggle from its viewers.

You also can’t help but dreamily admire the respectful and gentlemanly way that our lawyer (Lee Dong-wook) went about treating Yoon-seo (Yoo In-na).

Don’t we all want a partner that treats us with respect and care? Add to the mix, Lee Dong-wook’s handsomeness and you have got yourself a perfect Prince Charming 😉

  1. Extraordinary You

KOREAN NAME: 어쩌다 발견한 하루 (Eojjeoda Balgyeonhan Haru) | STARRING: Kim Hye-yoon, Kim Ro-woon (of SF9), Lee Jae-wook, Lee Na-eun, Jung Gun-joo, Kim Young-dae, Lee Tae-ri | GENRE: School, Youth, Fantasy, Romance

A unique youth love story painted colorful by the lively cast!

With a vibrant young cast beautifully immersing themselves into their characters, a crazily woven plot that still manages to lend a stable progression to the drama as a whole and the heart fluttering moments between the main leads, the drama captures the viewers’ attention easily.

The resolution of the two love triangles in the drama is kind of predictable and cliché but endearing nonetheless. The aegyo moments are also an added bonus that you just can’t afford to miss 😉

  1. Clean With Passion For Now

KOREAN NAME: 일단 뜨겁게 청소하라! (Ildan Tteugeopge Cheongsohara!) | STARRING: Kim Yoo-jung, Yoon Kyun-sang, Song Jae-rim | GENRE: Romantic Comedy

What happens when two opposites meet?

They attract obviously 😉

Kim Yoo Jung in this drama is playing the role of Gil Oh Sol who is a slob, a cute one but still a slob, ‘not all that’ concerned about hygiene whereas the male main lead (Jang Sun Gyul) is a germophobic, “always concerned” about hygiene. The story follows these two leads’ interactions as our cute slob gets a job at Jang Sun Gyul’s company.

The humorous, chaotic and engaging scenes that follow, combined with the entry of a suitor of Gil Oh Sol complicating the situation even further, make the drama perfect for a light-hearted relaxing weekend for the viewers 🙂
