On October 2, 2016, Blockberry Creative announced through Naver that they would be debuting their ‘first girl group‘ through an 18-month long pre-debut project with each member releasing a single album consisting of a solo track and another track performed with other revealed members, under the group’s Korean name ‘Idarui Sonyeo’.
The group’s first sub-unit, ‘Loona 1/3‘, was introduced, consisting of previously revealed members HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul and a new member, ViVi which released the extended play ‘Love & Live’ and an accompanying single of the same name on March 13, 2017.
They also released a repackaged edition of the extended play, titled ‘Love & Evil’, on April 27, 2017.
Continuing the same Girl of the Month pattern, members ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry released their single albums between April 2017 and July 2017.
In September 2017, three members, HeeJin, HyunJin and HaSeul, auditioned for JTBC’s reality show ‘Mix Nine’ where HyunJin placed ‘Top 18‘ and HeeJin placed ‘4th‘ in the finale.
The group’s second sub-unit, ‘Loona Odd Eye Circle‘, consisting of JinSoul, Kim Lip and Choerry, released the extended play ‘Mix & Match’ on September 21, 2017, and performed it on Mnet’s ‘M Countdown’.
They also released an English version of their song “Loonatic” on October 23, 2017.
On October 31, 2017 they released a repackaged edition of the extended play, titled ‘Max & Match’, which included three new songs.
Between November 2017 and January 2018, they released the solo single albums for new members Yves, Chuu, and Go Won, continuing the monthly pattern.
In March 2018, they released the solo single album for their final member, Olivia Hye.
On May 30, 2018, the group’s third sub-unit, ‘Loona yyxy‘, made their debut with the extended play ‘Beauty & the Beat’.
On August 7, 2018, Loona released “favOriTe” as a digital pre-debut single which was the. first video of Loona as a full group.
They debuted on August 20, 2018, with their title track “Hi High” under their debut extended play, ‘[+ +] ‘(read as plus plus) which was repackaged as ‘[X X]’ (read as multiple multiple) on February 19, 2019, with six additional tracks.
On December 13, 2019, Loona released a single called “365” as an appreciation song for their fans, the Orbits.
In 2019 Loona was nominated and won at various award shows like the MTN Ad Festival Awards (Category- Commercial Star Rookie), Soribada Best K-Music Awards (Category- Performance Awards), Korea First Brands Awards (Category- Most Anticipated Female Rookie Group) and Asia Artist Awards where they won in two categories, Popularity Award (Girl-group) and Focus Award (singer).
On February 5, 2020, Loona released their second EP titled ‘[#]’ with the lead single, “So What“.
Loona has also become the 1st Korean Girl-group to bag both #1 spot for album (X X) and for their single (365) on US all genres on iTunes.
As of 2020, [#] album has become the most successful album by a Korean Girl-group on iTunes with 56 #1s and still counting!
An intense and attitude-filled song which infuses hip-hop elements into an urban dance track, Loona’s latest comeback, “So What”, left fans and non-fans alike, totally impressed and spellbound!
With inspiring lyrics that talk of finding oneself, Loona’s single, “Butterfly” is a unique song which combines delicate rapping, mellifluous vocals and a dynamic EDM instrumental, adding a depth of colour to the overall song.
With 12 members in the group, Loona still doesn’t err when it comes to being in sync and performing a dance routine no matter how challenging it might be and their dance covers of various artists like BTS, NCT 127 and Got7 is proof of that.
